ONE BOOK, ONE UIS
The Brookens Library ONE BOOK, ONE UIS program aims to enrich the campus at the University of Illinois Springfield. Together, we will read the same book, giving students, staff and faculty the opportunity to engage and interact with one another through the exploration of ideas and themes found in the reading. Special events and programs, book discussions and other activities will help the UIS campus grow closer together as we learn about ourselves, one another, and the world around us. Leadership lived begins with just one book!
The 2013 ONE BOOK, ONE UIS Selected Book
Brookens Library, the ONE BOOK, ONE UIS Steering Committee and the University of Illinois Springfield’s Chancellor’s Office are proud to announce the inaugural ONE BOOK, ONE UIS selection: Pulitzer Prize Winning Author, Katherine Boo’s “Behind the Beautiful Forevers”. The book unveils a stunning true story about the slums of India, delving into issues surrounding life, death and hope. By integrating the book into classroom, hosting book discussions and other events throughout the semester, we will explore themes of poverty, greed, promise and more as we move through Boo’s riveting piece of nonfiction. The 2013 ONE BOOK, ONE UIS will culminate with the cornerstone event: Author Katherine Boo will speak about her book at The University of Illinois Springfield (Sangamon Auditorium) on Monday, October 7, 2013. A book signing will immediately follow.
